After winning La Liga this season, Barcelona are hoping to translate their domestic success into European performance next season under Xavi Hernandez.
That is the message from Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who spoke to Movistar Plus about Barcelona’s ambitions for the Champions League next season.
“We always aim high in that competition. It is one of Barça’s goals for next season,” the goalkeeper said.
The German international thinks that lifting the league trophy will boost the team’s morale and motivation for the new season. “We have to start well, both in La Liga and in the Champions League,” he added.
Ter Stegen has been a key factor behind Barcelona’s league title this season. He has kept 25 clean sheets in 34 games, breaking some records along the way. He could equal Francisco Liano’s record of 26 clean sheets in a single season if he keeps another one.
However, the German will want to do better in the Champions League next season. He did not manage to keep a clean sheet in any of his five games in that competition this term. He also conceded goals in both of his Europa League games.
Although the Barcelona defence should take most of the blame for their poor showing in Europe, there is hope that they can improve next season, especially with Barça planning to reinforce their squad this summer.
The club are looking to sign a new midfielder and a new striker for next season. They are also trying to secure the renewal of Lionel Messi, who could be the key to Barça’s quest for European glory next season.
