Charles Opoku emerges victorious in NPPs Assin North primary

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has chosen Charles Opoku as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Assin North by-election. He secured 397 votes in the internal election held on June 6, 2023, beating his rival Fredrick Amoah Kyei who got 136 votes.

Opoku had expressed confidence in his victory before the election, citing his achievements in the constituency as a factor that would help him win the primary.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) was working with the NPP to register an ineligible NPP parliamentary candidate, who was Charles Opoku, on the constituency’s voters roll.

The EC, however, dismissed the allegations in a statement, stating that it had not received any request from the NPP to transfer any voter’s registration.

Opoku will face off with the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson in the by-election slated for June 27.

The NPP’s national executives, led by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, have pledged their support for the winner.
