A 21-year-old fitness influencer from China, known as Cuihua, passed away on Saturday after joining a weight loss camp where she aimed to lose 200 pounds as quickly as possible.
Her family confirmed her death on her Douyin account, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, where she had nearly 10,000 followers.
“We appreciate your support and love for Cuihua. Our child has left us for heaven, and we are still in shock. We hope that people will not be misled by malicious people who exploit this tragedy for their amusement, which could hurt us and our family. Let our child rest in peace, thank you!” the family said in a video posted on her account, according to the New York Post.
The exact cause of death is unknown, but her parents said that she was taken to the hospital after feeling unwell following a workout session.
Cuihua was determined to lose 200 pounds. She enrolled in one of China’s weight loss camps, which have become popular in recent years due to the country’s growing obesity problem. There, Cuihua managed to lose 80 pounds in eight months, with 57 pounds lost in the first two months and another 23 pounds in the next six months, New York Post reported.
The 21-year-old would livestream her morning and evening workouts on Douyin, which involved intense cardio and strength training exercises such as battle ropes and weightlifting. In the videos that she shared online, Cuihua appeared to struggle with the workouts.
She also followed a strict diet of “coarse grains, cabbage, eggs, and fruit”.
