The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization has given a one-month deadline to all MoMo merchants who have not registered their SIMs. The Ministry says this is to curb the fraudulent activities of some criminals who use unregistered merchant SIMs.
The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, disclosed this in parliament on Thursday, June 8, 2023, while updating the house on the SIM re-registration exercise. She said that out of the 280,000 merchant SIMs in the country, almost half of them have not been registered.
She warned that all unregistered merchant SIMs will be permanently blocked from the networks by the end of June 2023. She also urged victims of fraud to report to the National Communications Authority (NCA) for swift action.
She further advised those who have registered their SIMs but have not completed the second stage of the process to contact the NCA to rectify their registration. She said that the NCA will announce when the grace period will end, after which all unregistered SIMs will be permanently blocked.
Additionally, she announced that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are collaborating with the Bank of Ghana to help customers retrieve their funds from locked mobile money accounts.
