Ghana embraces Natural Capital Accounting for GDP calculation

Ghana is taking steps to include Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) in its calculation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to achieve more comprehensive and inclusive growth and development.

The NCA initiative in Ghana, which began a year ago and is led by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), along with other Ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Finance, National Development Planning Commission, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and Forestry Commission, has the support of the World Bank.

The initiative will ensure that the country’s natural resources are valued in its GDP. The EPA Executive Director, Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, revealed this at a breakfast meeting with journalists in Accra to enlighten them on how NCA is computed. He said the aim was to foster inclusive growth and development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
