Bayern Munich recently sacked their CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, despite clinching the Bundesliga title in a dramatic fashion. This has caught the attention of Barcelona, who are interested in one of their star players.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the renowned Italian journalist, Barcelona are monitoring the situation of Joshua Kimmich at Bayern Munich. The German midfielder is one of Xavi’s main targets as he plans to replace Sergio Busquets, who will leave the club at the end of the season.
However, Barcelona face a tough challenge in signing Kimmich. The previous Bayern Munich board, led by Kahn and Salihamidzic, had no intention of letting go of Kimmich. He was regarded as an ‘untouchable’ figure within the Bayern camp.
Romano adds that the new Bayern Munich board must confirm the same stance on Kimmich. It is very unlikely that they would change their mind on the player, as he is considered the face of their project.
Barcelona, nevertheless, remain attentive to the situation. They managed to sign Robert Lewandowski last season, but it is doubtful that they can pull off a similar coup this time around – this time with Kimmich.
However, there are some hurdles that might be too hard to overcome, such as the player still having two years left on his contract. Moreover, he has shown no desire to leave Allianz Arena, unlike Lewandowski did last summer.
Barcelona, therefore, will probably have to look for other options in the market, in their quest to find a successor for Busquets.
