Leader of an illegal mining group allegedly beats uncle for giving evidence against him

Famous Axim galamsey leader, Kwame Ato Asare Ani, who gained attention when a video of him and other illegal miners molesting a police officer went viral, is making headlines again. This time, he is accused of assaulting a family member who provided damaging information during his arrest.

According to Charles Egyir, UTV’s Western Regional Correspondent, Kwame Ato Asare, who was recently released on bail, confronted his uncle, who also serves as the family head, regarding the testimony he gave during the initial arrest. The uncle labeled him a criminal and accused him of causing disturbances in the neighborhood. Additionally, it is alleged that the uncle accused Kwame Ato Asare of involvement in multiple rape cases.

The reporter highlighted that during the two months Kwame Ato Asare was in police custody, he appeared in court several times. His lawyer successfully secured bail for him, and he was released two weeks ago. However, upon his release, he confronted his uncle and allegedly assaulted him, causing injuries.

Community members swiftly intervened, taking the injured family head to the hospital and reporting the incident to the Axim Divisional Command. Consequently, Kwame Ato Asare was re-arrested and is currently in custody at the Sekondi Headquarters, where the police are conducting further investigations.

It should be noted that Kwame Ato Asare Ani, aged 21, was initially arrested along with two other suspects, Williams Kwofie, aged 17, and Emmanuel Kojo Bronie, aged 17, in Boinso, a community near Enchi in the Western North Region. The arrest followed the circulation of a viral video showing Kwame Ato Asare and other illegal miners mistreating a police officer, leading to his being declared wanted by the police.
