Nine Children Dead After Boat Capsizes on Way to School

Nine children between the ages of 8 and 15 have lost their lives after a boat transporting them to school capsized on Wednesday, May 10.

The incident occurred as the children were travelling from Faana to Kelee in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. The bodies of eight of the children were found earlier and sent to the Korle Teaching Hospital morgue. The body of the ninth child was retrieved on Thursday morning after a frantic search by concerned youth.

According to Christian Afiadenyo, Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), three pupils survived the disaster. One boy among the pupils was operating the boat before the incident occurred, though it is not clear whether he was one of the three survivors.

The town is said to be in mourning since the incident occurred.
