A Nissan driver was flown to hospital after his car hit a barrier and flew into the air in a shocking accident at a SUPER GT race.
The incident happened on the 59th lap of the 77-lap race, when Tsugio Matsuda’s Nissan collided with Kosuke Matsuura’s Lamborghini.
The impact sent Matsuda’s car spinning into the air and crashing into the right-side wall at the exit of the corner.
Matsuda was conscious when he was rescued from the car and taken by helicopter to hospital.
Nissan Motorsports International later announced that Matsuda did not suffer any major injuries.
They said: “Matsuda was checked at the hospital and no serious injuries were found.
“We are relieved to hear this, but we will follow up and re-check. We apologize for any concern this may have caused our fans.”
Matsuura was able to walk away from his damaged Lamborghini and was also reported to be unhurt.
The frightening accident shocked fans who wished the drivers well.
One said: “I can’t believe what I just saw. Seeing Formula 1 cars go side by side at Suzuka 130R is scary enough, but GT cars? I hope the drivers are ok.”
Another said: “Matsuda escaped major injuries after his crash at Suzuka. I hope he recovers quickly.”
Another said: “I’m so grateful for modern safety. Tsugio Matsuda survived this. It’s one of the worst crashes I’ve ever seen.”
One said: “I feel relieved.”
