The Ghana Police Service has taken into custody 79 trespassers who emerged from the underground area of the Obuasi Gold mine owned by AngloGold Ashanti.

The company said in a statement that the unauthorized individuals came out of the mine through the main exit point on their own and were handed over to the police. No one was injured in the incident.

The trespassers had entered the mine without permission and were trapped inside for some time. On Tuesday, a group of angry youth stormed the Obuasi police station to demand their release.

AngloGold Ashanti thanked the security personnel and the police for ensuring the safe and orderly exit of the trespassers. It also urged any remaining unauthorized individuals underground to use the designated exit points, where public security personnel are on standby.

The company said it remains committed to the safety and security of its employees and community members. AngloGold Ashanti is an independent, global gold mining company with operations, projects and exploration activities across nine countries on four continents.
