Onua TV presenter sued by Finance Minister over false allegations

Captain Smart, who hosts “Maakye with Captain Smart” on Onua TV and Onua FM, is facing a lawsuit from the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, for allegedly making defamatory statements about him.

The presenter is accused of saying that Mr. Ofori-Atta has taken a 10% cut from the $3 billion loan that Ghana received from the International Money Fund (IMF).

“Do you know that Ken Ofori-Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? He takes 10% for every loan we get,” Captain Smart is reported to have said on his show.

The Finance Minister is seeking “recovery of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) as general damages including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation for the libel uttered by Defendant. An apology for and retraction of the words complained of and particularized supra” among other reliefs.
