The king of Asanteman, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, has removed the chief of Antoa from his position. Antoa is a well-known town in Asanteman because of its river god, Antoa Nyamaa, which is believed to deliver swift justice.
The chief, Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, who has ruled for over two decades, is accused of breaking customary rules by appointing his nephew as his successor while he is still alive.
He is also accused of selling lands multiple times.
The Otumfuo announced his verdict at a meeting of the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday.
The rituals for the removal of the chief have begun immediately.
Antoa Nyamaa is a famous shrine in Ghana, where people go to swear oaths or seek arbitration in disputes.
People also go to Antoa to perform rituals to free themselves from the oath of the river god.
