The Eastern Regional capital Koforidua has witnessed a surge of prostitution activities, which the local MP says could harm the youth and tarnish the city’s reputation.
Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, has pledged to make Koforidua a no-go zone for commercial sex workers. He said he would not allow the city to be corrupted by prostitution, which is mostly dominated by Nigerians.
To back up his words, he ordered the Koforidua District Police Command to raid some notorious brothels and ghettos in the city on Saturday. The operation resulted in the arrest of about 50 prostitutes, of whom over 90 percent were Nigerians.
The MP confirmed the arrest while speaking at Pentecost International Worship Center in Koforidua (PIWC-KOFORIDUA) over the weekend. He urged the residents, especially landlords, to report any suspected prostitutes in their area to the police for action.
He said: “We arrested about 50 people yesterday after I directed the police to do an operation in town. We want to arrest all the prostitutes that have come to the town. And about 99 percent of them are Nigerians.”
“We will not tolerate prostitution in Koforidua. We need your help to deal with this problem in the town,” he added.
