On Thursday, June 7, 2023, Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated a modern National Aquaculture Centre and Commercial Farms at Amrahia, in the Greater Accra region.
The project, which cost US$12 million, is part of the government’s efforts to boost the fisheries and aquaculture sector, following the opening of the €86 million Elmina Fishing Harbour by the President last week.
President Akufo-Addo said that the government recognized the potential of the aquaculture sub-sector to address the gap between fish supply and demand in the country.
He said that in 2019, the government approved and launched the Greenhouse Aquaculture Technology system in September 2021 to increase domestic fish production, to enhance aquaculture skills and to create jobs for the youth.
