Seven die 17 missing in illegal mining pit collapse

A horrific accident took place at Korle Teye (Takorso site) in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region, where a group of miners were working in an illegal mining pit that suddenly collapsed on them.

The accident claimed the lives of seven miners and left 17 others trapped under the rubble and the local residents are doing their best to save the trapped miners with whatever makeshift tools they can find, but the situation is dire and the hope of finding them alive is fading.

So far, only two miners have managed to survive the collapse, with injuries, while the corpses of the seven victims have been laid on the ground and covered with leaves.

The miners did not welcome any media presence at the site and chased away journalists who tried to take pictures of the scene.
