A police officer escorting a bullion van lost his life when four armed men attacked him at a gas station in Ablekuma Fanmilk, a suburb of Accra.
The robbers fired shots randomly around the station as they snatched two boxes containing cash from the van on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
An eyewitness who spoke anonymously said they initially thought it was the security guard at the station who usually fired warning shots.
“However, when I looked closely, I saw two men shooting everywhere on the premises so we all ran for cover. I later saw two men carrying a box each with motorbike riders waiting for them.
“They left with their boxes on their bikes towards Pokuase,” he said.
He added that they were terrified by what they saw when they went to check on the scene after the robbers left.
“We saw a policeman who had been shot dead. We were very scared. We have never seen anything like this before. It is too much in Ghana and government must do something,” he said.
Another witness said she thought there was a fire outbreak at the station and ran for her life.
“A guy from the station also told us to run. I saw two men with boxes on motorbikes shooting as they left.
“When we went back to the scene, we saw a policeman shot dead. The boys later put him in a car and took him to hospital,” she said.
The police have confirmed that one of their officers died in the attack and have launched a manhunt for the robbers.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with our deceased colleague’s family and all personnel of Police Service,” they said in a statement.
They also assured that public that they will arrest and prosecute those responsible for this heinous crime.
